And because Utah car insurance laws are so varied, we will explain exactly what you need for your Utah car insurance policy.

Utah car insurance laws require you to have at least liability coverage. The minimum liability coverage you are required to have in Utah is:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
  • $65,000 per accident for bodily injury
  • $15,000 per accident for property

What the Numbers Mean

On your Utah car insurance policy, you will see the breakdown of your coverage displayed as 25k/65k/15k (your amounts may be different). These numbers are the limits to your coverage in case of an accident.

The first number (25k) is the amount you are covered per person for bodily injury in the case of an accident; however, this amount is capped by the second number.

The second number (65k) is the total amount your insurance company will pay for bodily injury per accident. This means if four people are injured in an accident, instead of each person having a limit of 25k, they will each share the 65k bodily injury amount.

The third number (15k) is the total amount your insurance company will pay to repair property damages in case of an accident.

Most people don’t realize that Utah’s minimum insurance coverage isn’t adequate. In the case of an accident, with basic coverage, you could end up paying tens of thousands of dollars out of your own pocket. Protecting against this is as simple as talking with your insurance agent and paying an additional $5-10 a month on your policy.

What to Ask Your Agent

Getting Utah car insurance doesn’t have to be a complicated process. Next time you are talking with an insurance agent about your policy, here are a few questions you should ask both yourself and your agent.

How much can you afford to pay if you get in an accident? You may want to pay a higher deductible to keep your payments lower.

What is the insurance company’s level of service and ability to pay claims? Different insurance companies have different procedures and levels of customer service. Choose one that is best for you.

What discounts are available to you? If you meet with a Mr. Insurance agent, we will ask you questions to find every possible discount you qualify for. Some of those include good driver discounts, student discounts, multiple policy discounts.

What is the procedure for filing and settling a claim? You should find out who to call, how to file a claim, and what happens after a claim is filed.
